Inspiring and Empowering Our Daughters to Grow Into Strong, Confident Women

Pregnant with our first child, my husband and I were on the edge of our seats during the ultrasound to determine the gender. “You’re having a girl!” she announced. Emotions came crashing down, a girl, but I’m not a girly girl. I’m so in over my head. As we shared the news with friends and family, the age old debate began, girls vs. boys which gender is easier to raise.

Now that our daughter MC, is 4, you can see her personality in everything she does from the outfits she chooses to wear, to the compassion she shows when someone is hurt or sick. Everyone that knows me, teases me that the hospital must have made a mistake, because she loves to wear dresses, can’t wait to wear make-up, and is just such the total opposite of me. At only four, we’ve seen both her independent side and a stubborn streak.

In school, I was teased a lot because I’d rather play basketball than go shopping. I’d rather watch football with my guy friends than go to the movies with my girl friends. And I never, ever wore a dress! Ever. Maybe, MC won’t be teased like I was, but if she is, I’m ready to support her in finding her identity and pursuing her dreams and not mine.

My hope is to teach my daughter that her identity isn’t just tied to her body or her gender. My goal is that we can communicate openly about her opinions, emotions, and feelings about boys and sex. However, I know the tween and teenage years will be full of change and challenges as we both learn how to navigate around her new need for privacy, and my desire to protect her.
