Tips for Snacks on the Go and Portion Control

I have notoriously bad eating habits. It’s not that I eat a lot of junk food, it’s that I eat infrequently, and my blood sugar soars and dives throughout the day. It’s also bad for my diet. So I’ve started trying to keep snacks handy throughout. Here are some simple tips from Hershey’s Moderation Nation that will help me, and you, spice up the snack routine, eat better and maintain a balanced diet.

Portion Control

Portion control can be a difficult feat, especially when it comes to busy schedules and always snacking on-the-go.

Remember this “Rule of Thumb” for portion sizing. The best tool to use when portioning your snacks is actually always with you – your hand!

  • The size of your thumb = a serving of cheese
  • Two thumbs = a serving of your favorite nut butter
  • A handful = the number of nuts you should eat
  • A balled fist = a serving of fruits or veggies

Healthy Snacks On The Go


Grapes are incredibly healthy snacks, and this tip makes them even better. Freeze grapes over night and then bring them with you on your daily errands. In the morning they have a frozen popsicle like flavor and by afternoon they’re completely thawed.
