Remember in “Jerry Maguire”, when Cuba Gooding Jr. tells Tom Cruise to “Show me the Money!” ? I use that same line every time I ask my husband for some cash. Several years ago, not too long after the movie was out, I was at the bank drive-thru cashing my paycheck, and I shouted “Show me the money” to the cashier. She was not amused.
Money is such a big part of everyone’s everyday lives that I’ve often wondered why its not a large part of school curriculum. Instead of those frustrating math problems that involve Train A and Train B (remember those?), why not teach children how to budget their lunch money? Yes, I know, everyone manages money differently and has different priorities, but some basic skills on how to budget, how to prioritize bills, and the importance of saving are valuable life skills.
I was fortunate to have parents that taught me the importance of a budget and savings. When our daughter was a few months old, we went to the bank and opened a savings account for her. Soon, she’ll begin getting an allowance and we’ll teach her what she can spend and what has to be saved.
