As much as my children want to enjoy their last week and half before going back to school, school seems to be the number one thing on their mind. So, as long as it is on their mind I might as well talk “school” to them and start preparing them for the first day of school.
The first day of school is when teachers normally introduce themselves to the students, as well as go over the rules and expectations for the year. I like to tell my children to make sure they pay attention to the rules and the explanation of their class structure. Also, listen for how the teacher wants you to raise your hand for questions or to use the restroom
Also, the first day is a great day to see friends they have not seen over the summer but also they should look for new students in the class. It may be a great opportunity to meet new friends too.
The first day of school can be a little nerve wrecking, moving up a grade and not really knowing what is ahead. Plus there are always those rumors about the different teachers which can always add to the stress depending on which teacher your child gets. Among the things that may help your child have a “feel good” first day of school is a new outfit, a new haircut, new shoes, new headband, etc.
Also, since many children do bring all of their school supplies the first day of school, you will want to pack up them all up at least the night before school starts, if not earlier. If they are having a full day of school that first day they will also need a nutritious lunch from home or one from the school.
Lastly, a good nights sleep and a healthy breakfast may help deal with the transitions of the day. However, sometimes even though everything has been done to ensure a great first day of school, for whatever reason the day many not go as well as they had hoped. Often times things will sort themselves out, but if they do not encourage your child to talk to a parent, teacher, or a counselor.
