They’re doing it at K-Mart, and its happening at Wal-Mart too. All across America anonymous donors are paying off layaways that are in jeopardy. It started in Michigan and as word spread, so did the Christmas spirit. They’ve been called layaway angels and Anonymous Secret Santas, but regardless of their nickname or identity I call them AMAZING!
Now as of Wednesday morning, more than $420,000 has been donated by more than 1,000 benefactors among the network of 1,300 Kmart stores, according to a corporate spokeswoman. And not only will these children have toys, but many of the layaways contain essentials like clothing and sleepwear.
With record breaking unemployment rates many Americans are struggling this holiday season and some families are faced with the decision between paying the light bill or picking up their Christmas gifts. Its amazing how the generosity of one person can spark so many into action. People are reading these stories of layaway angels and finding inspiration to go out into their local stores and pay it forward for someone else. I’ve personally seen countless news stories being shared on Facebook and then others commenting with things like “I’m going to go do this, anyone with me?” and “What a great idea, I want to help.”
Many of the people helped by these anonymous donors have helped others. A grandmother who benefited from a donor said she’s planning to take the money she’d been saving and pay it toward’s someone else’s layaway. Several people that donated have said they’d received help at some point in their lives and want to return the favor to others.
Generosity is contagious and every little bit helps, donations have ranged from $50 to hundreds. And while $50 doesn’t sound like a lot of money to some, for many that are struggling it could make a huge difference.
That is what Christmas is about, right? Tis’ better to give than to receive! And every child should have something to open on Christmas morning. It’s not too late to help, there are so many layaways still open, many opportunities to still help a needy family. Let’s reach out and make a difference this season!

I’ve decided that I want to try and do some sort of donation (whether it be on layaway accounts, taking the last names of the angel trees, etc) this year (and hopefully every year from now on!) as a group effort from not only myself, but my wonderful readers as well.
I know that many of you are in difficult financial times yourselves, but still have the desire to provide and instill hope and happiness in someone else’s life. But due to your own situations feel you can’t afford to do anything like this. This is where I come in and tell you that you can. WE CAN. There is power in numbers folks. So while you wouldn’t go to Kmart yourself to “donate” $1, as a group if we each contribute just $1, t could easily turn into $200 or $1,000 – which is nothing to sneeze at!!
Here is what I propose. I want to make a donation on Saturday morning. I want everyone to be able to participate so I am only asking for $1 from you. (if you can and want to donate more, that’s fantastic!!) I will then, match your $1 with $1 of my own. So if I get $50 in donations from all of you, I will throw in $50 and take $100 to donate from US. I will take pictures and tweet and FB post on Saturday as I do it so you all can “be a part of it” too!
I will also hold a very special Pay it Forward Giveaway in which only the people who have donated will be automatically entered. Everyone will get one entry regardless of dollar amount donated. I am undecided of the exact prizing yet, but I promise you it will be worth AT LEAST $100.
We already asked for new, unwrapped toys for Whistler’s 2nd Birthday last month and donated them all to Toys for Tots. That was wonderful and its something we will make a tradition out of. I’d love to make this a tradition that we all can be proud of being a part of too!
If you would like to donate, please send your gift via paypal to email@example.com or you can use the easy button form below:
You decide how much – but I’m hoping that all of you will find it in your hearts to give one measly dollar….(one third the cost of a coffee at Starbucks!) to make a big difference in a stranger’s life this holiday season! (Hopefully I’ve helped you save hundreds or thousands over the past 2 years, right?)
Be sure to leave me a comment below once you have donated just to let me know you did :) Donations will be accepted up until 10am Saturday, 12/24. Please use the share buttons below to encourage your friends and family to join in this movement as well.
