I love food and I love to cook. I’d say about 90% of the food we eat in our house is something I’ve made from scratch. As such, there are 2 items in my kitchen that I always splurge and spend the extra dough for quality on – cookware and knives. A dull or “cheap” knife is probably my #1 pet peeve in the kitchen!
I was recently asked to review a Chef’s Knife from Shenzhen Ceramic Knives. These ceramic knives are made of an advanced ceramic called zirconia, the second hardest material known to man next to diamond. The material’s properties make it particularly resistant to wear and tear, which means that a ceramic blade can hold its edge much longer than a steel blade without the need for re-sharpening as often as steel knives.
I was extremely surprised at how SHARP this knife was right out of the box. Of all the brand new high end knives I’ve ever purchased, I can’t recall one that was ever as sharp as this one. I almost felt like it was “too sharp” (is that even possible??!?!) because as I was beautifully gliding through tomatoes, the blade would actually slightly “stick” to my plastic cutting board because the edge so easily went right into it.
I have been using this knife for about a month now and although it isn’t as crazy sharp as it was those first few uses, it is still very sharp and my go-to knife when slicing soft-skin vegetables like tomatoes and mushrooms. I know I would not be able to say the same about my other steel blade knives. I had actually just recently complained to Ben that my previous “expensive” knife set purchase already needed sharpening and that the set wasn’t even 3 weeks old.
I would like to point out though, that I don’t feel this is an all-purpose knife. There are certain foods and items that I actually prefer to use a steel blade on. As such, I feel that ceramic knives are great way to complement your steel knives – when precision cutting is needed. I’d also like to point out the price point of this awesome knife – it’s totally affordable and would be a welcome addition to anyone’s kitchen.
The Shenzhen 6″ Ceramic Chef’s Knife is suitable for everyday kitchen use like slicing meat or cutting vegetables. It’s surprisingly lightweight, easy and comfortable to use.
