{Review} Hoover Tempo Widepath Vacuum

Hoover Tempo My husband and I were both 21 when we got married. He was in the beginning of his first semester of college and though I was a few semesters in, I was still a full time student. Money was tight and we started our married student life together living in half of a small basement. I would guess it was about 450 square feet. I wish I were exaggerating. The good thing about living in that tiny of a space is that we could do all of our vacuuming with the Dustbuster we had inherited from my parents house (the other good thing was the $395/month rent, utilities included!).

Several months later when we moved to our luxurious 700 square foot apartment, we had to go vacuum shopping. We did what any level headed couple with a combined income of $900 a month would do and bought the cheapest vacuum available on Earth. I think it was $30. We kept that vacuum for six years! SIX years. I had long had suspicions that our vacuum wasn’t really doing anything besides moving the dirt around from one place to the next, but I wasn’t really bothered by that at the time.

A couple of years ago, however, following a small child’s attempt to eat a Christmas tree ornament hook, I had had enough. My vacuum wasn’t doing anything, and it never really had. It was time for a change. My heart of hearts wanted to buy a Dyson. I had heard rave reviews and felt I had earned the privilege after suffering half of a decade with the worlds worst vacuum. But, I couldn’t stomach the $400 price tag.

So, I did what I always do. I turned to the good people of the Internet and read no less than a  bajillion reviews on vacuum cleaners. I read reviews on amazon.com, bestbuy.com, walmart.com, consumerreports.com.  After a couple of weeks I realized that my only real option was to buy the Hoover Tempo Widepath Vacuum. Amazon alone had over 2,200 reviews for the thing, and after all of those reviews still had a 4 star rating.

I was hesitant because of my history with inexpensive vacuums. The price tag of  the Hoover Tempo was only $74.44 and included free shipping right to my door. I was a little unnerved by the fact that this vacuum used bags. Vacuum bags, in my mind, were a fun relic from the past. I put my fears to rest though and was consoled by the sheer number of positive reviews. Worst case scenario was me being out $75, which was a relatively small gamble.

A few days later my vacuum arrived. For kicks, I first vacuumed my floor with my old vacuum. Then I fired up the Tempo, you should have heard that thing! It was sucking up SO much stuff that my vacuum had left behind, months worth of stuff. It was amazing.

I marveled at the crisp vacuum lines in my carpet. I set my crawling baby down on the carpet and gleefully watched her, knowing darn well that there was nothing left on the carpet, no dirt, no ornaments, nothing but carpet. I bragged about my new found love to my Dyson owning friends. They claimed my vacuum would die within months and that it would have to be replaced.

Here I am folks! Two years later and my $75 vacuum is still going strong.

From reading reviews I knew in advance to purchase a couple of extra vacuum belts (two belts for $3.43). Several people mentioned that the vacuum had a problem with belts breaking occasionally. About a year ago I noticed my vacuum wasn’t really working so well anymore. I thought maybe the naysayers were right, and that I had reached my moment of reckoning. Then I remembered about the belts. I easily removed the old belt (which had snapped) put on the new belt, and my vacuum was as good as new! Haven’t had a single problem since.  Spending a buck fifty and five minutes every year to keep my Hoover in tiptop shape is fine by me.

So there you have it. I’m not saying it is better than the Dyson, but I am saying that it is less than 1/3rd of the cost and every bit as good as one!

If you decide to give the Hoover Tempo a try, be sure to purchase a set of agitator belts and extra bags to have on hand. I was glad that I had done so so I didn’t have to worry about it when I had to change the belt. Happy housekeeping!

I want to note here that I did not receive a free vacuum to review. This is an honest to goodness love letter to my favorite appliance. I love it, it’s inexpensive, and if you need a new vacuum, it is an excellent option!
