Disney's The Muppets Review: Applause Please

Its time to start the music. Its time to light the lights. Its time to get the gang back together when The Muppets return to the big screen (TODAY!) November 23, for the first time in 12 years.

While on vacation in Los Angeles, Walter, the world’s biggest Muppet fan, his brother Gary (Jason Segel) and Gary’s girlfriend, Mary (Amy Adams), from Smalltown, USA, learn of the devious plan of oilman Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) to destroy Muppet Studios in order to drill for oil recently discovered below the Muppets’ former stomping grounds. The only way to save the Studio is to reunite the gang, stage a telethon and raise $10 million.Walter, Mary and Gary help Kermit reunite the Muppets, who have all gone their separate ways: Fozzie is on stage performing with a Reno casino tribute band known as the Moopets, Miss Piggy is a plus-size fashion editor at Vogue Paris, Animal is in a Santa Barbara clinic for anger management, and Gonzo is a successful plumbing magnate.

“We’re here to sing, dance, make people laugh and somehow, just maybe, make the world a little bit better place. That may sound silly, especially coming from a frog. But the Muppets have always tried to inspire the world with silliness and to show folks that no matter who you are or how weird you seem to others, there’s a place for you and people who care about you. And when you find that place and meet those people, wonderful things happen.”

Kermit the Frog

When I started writing various pieces for Disney’s The Muppets a few weeks ago, my daughter McKenzie started talking about the Muppets. She’d walk up and see a picture on the screen and say “I want to go see them. I want to watch the Muppets.” And from that moment on with every new article, we’d both get more excited about going to see The Muppets.

My excitement revolved around the fact that I was going to be able to share my childhood love of the Muppets with my daughter and a new generation. Tonight, we saw The Muppets at an advanced screening and I’m so glad Disney chose to bring back The Muppets in their classic style without the use of CG animation or 3D. Watching my daughter as her face lit up through the songs, the smile that appeared on her face when she saw Miss Piggy (I have the feeling she’ll be talking about her a lot), and hearing her spontaneous applause during various scenes of the movie was priceless.

My husband and I both enjoyed the movie but my daughter, well, she was engrossed. When Kermit and Miss Piggy finished singing the “Rainbow Connection” she clapped. No one else was clapping, she just spontaneously began clapping and it was so cool to watch her experience something from my childhood with the innocence and amazement of a 3 year old.

The music did a great job of entertaining us from Chris Cooper rapping, Camilla and the Chickens’ performance of “Forget You” (more applause by McKenzie) to the classic Muppet tunes “Mahna Mahna” and “The Rainbow Connection”, which both hit me with a wave of nostalgia. Fozzie Bear (Wocka Wocka Wocka), Kermit, Miss Piggy, Animal, Gonzo and gang have kept the same classic charm and returned years later to remind us their eccentric characters and silliness are still funny to old fans and new.

Wonderful things happened tonight, The Muppets are back and hopefully this is the first of many new Muppets movies to come. There was a young girl sitting next to me, around 10 years old, when the movie ended she turned to her Mom and said, “that’s the best movie ever!

Go see The Muppets today and share an old favorite with a new generation of fans, then come back here and let me know your favorite part.
