Arthur Christmas Review: In Theaters November 23

Arthur Christmas from Aardman and Sony Pictures Animation opens in theaters everywhere today, November 23! My crew saw it Sunday at an advanced screening and all four of us loved it. This was our first trip to the movies with all four of us, my husband, 3 year old daughter and 15 month old son, so we weren’t quite sure how well it would work out. But thanks to a funny entertaining Arthur Christmas movie and a bucket of popcorn, it was a success!

But don’t ask me who enjoyed it more because I’m really not sure, none of us took our eyes off the screen. The stunning animation, creative plot, colorful characters like GrandSanta and Bryony, the compulsive gift-wrapping elf, were busy saving Christmas while we watched, laughed and silently cheered for Arthur the underdog to save Christmas for one child.

Has your child ever asked you how Santa is able to get to every child in every country in one night? How did you answer? Arthur Christmas answers that question for you. I’ve always wondered with all the new technology we have does Santa have an i-phone or use GPS?  The answer: Christmas wouldn’t be possible without Santa’s secret Army of Elves and their state of the art technology like the S1 sleigh or their communications center. It even touches on another question that’s recently arisen from kids with access to today’s technology: why can’t the North Pole be seen from Google Earth?

This film puts a new spin on a Christmas movie and seems to have something for the whole family. Most of the jokes are over the head of my little ones (but not inappropriate). Although GrandSanta reminds me of a family relative that we all have, you know the one that tells colorful stories that are often politically incorrect but true. The animation and certain character details are stunning: like Steve’s goatee in the shape of a Christmas tree or the detail in Arthur’s hair and way that it moves in the wind. Oh and did I mention it opens with the Justin Bieber “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town” music video?

For me Arthur Christmas presents a great way to introduce our daughter to the “elf on the shelf” and our season of Christmas stories and Christmas movies. I’m sure I’ll refer to it sometime down the road when she asks me how Santa makes it around the world in one night, gets down the chimney or how reindeer fly? And I have the feeling this year as we wrap the gifts she’ll remind me “there’s always time for a bow.” This movie preserves the Christmas spirit for those young and old with a classic Santa in a modern Christmas tale. We’ll definitely be adding this one to our holiday collection when its released on DVD, because “In Santa We Believe.”

Film Synopsis: The 3D, CG-animated family comedy Arthur Christmas, an Aardman production for Sony Pictures Animation, at last answers every child’s question: “So how does Santa deliver all those presents in one night?” The answer: Santa’s exhilarating, ultra-high-tech operation hidden beneath the North Pole. But at the heart of the film is a story with the ingredients of a Christmas classic – a family in a state of comic dysfunction and an unlikely hero: Santa’s biggest fan and youngest son, Arthur. When one child out of hundreds of millions is missed, Arthur, an unlikely hero, sets out on a hilarious, exciting covert mission racing against the clock with his grandfather Grandsanta and a giftwrapping-obsessed elf named Bryony, to deliver the last present before Christmas morning dawns.  The film is directed by Sarah Smith, written by Peter Baynham & Sarah Smith, and produced by Peter Lord, David Sproxton, Carla Shelley, and Steve Pegram.

I absolutely love this movie! I took my 5 year old daughter to see it, and neither of us could take our eyes off the screen! I didn’t even want to leave my seat to take her to the bathroom ;) I know, bad mommy, huh? (I did take her by the way! LOL) I can’t wait till it comes out on DVD so the rest of my crew can watch it. Your review was right on, too! Two thumbs up for Arthur Christmas!!

Thanks for the review on this movie! I love new animated Christmas movies but am always hesitant because the classics can’t be beat. I wasn’t sure if this was a movie my 2 year old would sit through. But if your family can do it, I can atleast give it a try!
