I like soda. Perhaps a little too much. What I don’t like is the cost and having to throw away all those cans (even though we recycle, it’s still better to not make/use them in the first place!) You can usually pick up the 2-liters for a pretty good price – but I really hate that they are so big and the carbonation only lasts a day or two. I always end up wasting about half because I don’t drink it in time, or I suck it up and drink flat soda. *ew*.

Then I saw the SodaStream. Making my own soda at home never really occurred to me. But the more I read about it, the more I knew I had to give it a shot. I was given the opportunity to try out the SodaStream Jet. It’s surprisingly simple! For some reason, I was expecting something really complicated to use, but when I pulled it out of the box and discovered it was virtually ready to go, I was pleasantly proved wrong.

The first time we used it, I decided very last minute that I wanted to have some Root Beer with dinner. Dinner was ready, but the table just need to be set up and food brought out and plated, etc. I went for the box and Ben said, “Why don’t you wait until after dinner to do that?”. I responded, “Because I want to have a soda WITH dinner, silly. It will only take a minute.” Ben scoffed and said, “I’ll bet you $5 that it takes you longer than 10 minutes to set up. I’ll have dinner on the table and already have eaten by the time you finish with that”. Oh Snap! He just called me out and it was on like Donkey Kong!!

I pulled the SodaStream Jet out of its box (fully assembled, by the way) and grabbed the user manual (which is in 16 languages, by the way!) I flipped to page 22 for English and saw that I was only 7 steps away from being $5 richer. The unit comes with 2 BPA-Free plastic 1 liter bottles – one of which is already attached to the machine.

Step 1 – unscrew the bottle, remove the paper warning inside (DO NOT wash this in the dishwasher!), clean with soapy water and rinse

Step 2 – remove the back cover. Just press the two buttons on either side and it slides right off. The second 1 liter bottle is hidden in here. I pulled it out, set it aside and grabbed the CO2 cylinder (the only other item in the packaging box other than 2 black caps for the plastic bottles).

Step 3 – remove the plastic seal and unscrew the plastic cap from the CO2 cylinder. Hand screw it tightly into place and then replace the back cover.

Step 4 & 5 – fill the cleaned bottle from step 1 with super cold water and screw back into place.

(At this point I looked at the clock – 3 minutes had gone by and I was already planning what I was going to spend the $5 on! I glanced around for an electrical outlet and the cord to plug it in and realized – there is none! It doesn’t need any power source whatsoever. Not even batteries!)

Step 6 – press the button on top of the machine (which is the carbonating button) and press 3 times till you hear a buzz (which will be the excess CO2 coming out. Its kinda fun!)

Step 7 – unscrew plastic bottle which now contains “seltzer” or sparkling soda water and add one cap-full of desired syrup.

(Be sure to pour the syrup in VERY VERY slowly and be near the sink. If you do it too fast, the carbonation goes crazy and will overflow, as if you had shaken it up :))

Step 8 – oh yeah, there is no step 8. I’m done in only 5 minutes time and dancing around kitchen singing “nah nah nah” to Ben. Whistler laughs at the sight and Ben tries to eat all the chicken so I won’t have any.

There are several things I really like about the SodaStream:

Since it requires no power source, you can use it anywhere – not just in your kitchen! Take it to a friends house, a BBQ, a picnic, camping, boating, or even tailgating!
You only make 1 liter at a time – which is the perfect amount for me. No more wasteful flat soda!
No empty bottles or cans to recycle or discard.
Each BPA-free carbonating bottle has a lifespan of 3 years and is not made with any polycarbonate materials or substances that produce phthalates or PCBs. The special hermetic sealing cap keeps drinks fresh and fizzy much longer than store-bought bottles.
One jug of syrup mix makes 12 liters = 33 12oz cans! At $4.99-$6.99 for a jug, that’s as low as $0.15/can! Their syrups also contain no high-fructose corn syrup or aspartame and there are over 30 regular and diet flavors to choose from. And get this, they have about one-third the calories of the name brands you buy at the store!
There is virtually NO CLEANUP. Its not messy at all and the only thing you’ll need to wash or clean is the plastic bottle after you’ve finished the soda!
The 1 liter bottle fits nicely in the fridge on just about any shelf – unlike the big store-bought 2 liters that I can only fit in ONE spot.
No storing cases of soda – which is great because at the new house, I just don’t have the room for them!!
I can put this away in a cupboard for neat storage. Then when I want to make some soda, I can pull it out and be done in about a minute and place it right back away just as easily!
The included CO2 cylinder will fizz 60 liters of water. When you need another, you can exchange/recycle them directly thru SodaStream online.
