Tell me more!

My Baby Can Talk is a series of award winning DVDs and board books that teaches babies and parents to communicate at an early age, reducing frustration and creating a special bond that is so important for healthy child development.  Babies are able to communicate at a much earlier age than they are able to speak. Research has shown that babies who use sign language tend to speak sooner with larger vocabularies, show an increase in IQ scores and engage in more sophisticated play.

The My Baby Can Talk DVD series is the first program featuring preverbal babies signing all the words presented. Set to inspiring classical music, My Baby Can Talk videos feature beautiful real world images, delightful puppet shows, colorful toys in motion and babies communicating with simple gestures.

The My Baby Can Talk board books are truly unique in subject and format with no equal available on the market today.  Each page comes alive with the word, a vibrant real world image and a delightful poem for parents to share with their babies.  In addition, an illustration of the sign and a formal sign description is offered for parents to learn and teach to their little ones.  These books are designed to inspire babies to learn to sign, learn to speak and begin to recognize the written word.”

Jeana’s 2 cents

At our baby shower in Seattle back in October of ’09, I saw our cousin’s baby, Zoe (about 1 years old), communicating with her mom.  I had not idea what she was saying because she wasn’t using words, she was using her hands, but it was obvious that her mommy sure did!  I walked over to see what all this was about.  I knew Zoe wasn’t talking yet, but she seemed to be communicating her needs and wants perfectly to her mom.  When I asked Tabby what was going on, she explained that Zoe had learned sign language and that she was asking for “more please”.  As I watched Zoe, I quickly learned and recognized the two signs, “more” and “please”.  I was impressed!  Not only was she communicating, but she was being pretty darn polite too!  It was altogether soo cute, but at the same time very intriguing!  Tabby had explained that teaching Zoe sign language was so incredibly helpful because it enabled her daughter to use her hand to communicate, thereby eliminating a lot of fuss and frustration.  I was immediately sold and told Ben that we were definitely going to teach Whistler sign language.

When we got home, I promptly ordered several books and began reading up on it.  I fell in love with not only the idea of being able to communicate effectively with my baby at a much earlier age, but also the added benefits of stimulating my baby’s mind and reducing stress and frustration..for the both of us!!

The books I purchased are great references and also do well to explain the theory behind teaching your baby sign language and how/why it works.  But as far as actually teaching my baby, that’s all they were.  A reference.  I initially chose just 2 signs to try with Whistler, “diaper” and “milk”.  I read that it’s never too early to sign to your baby because it’s all about repetition and recognition.  So I started about 3 months when he appeared to be fairly coherent and out of the “blob” stage.  Every time I changed his diaper, I make the sign for diaper before and after.  Also, any time I feed him, I would make the sign for milk and say “milk”.  Now the books also say that while you can start as early as you want, your baby will not be able to make signs back to you until he has real good motor control of his hands (around 9-10 months), but that he may begin to understand you somewhere around 6 months.

Whistler caught on really quick.  He recognized the sign for milk at around 4 months.  How do I know?  Because when he would cry and I knew he was hungry,  I ask him if he wanted “milk” (while signing to him) and he would stop crying and look at me expectantly.  At 6 months old he started showing excitement and grabbing my shirt when I signed “milk” to him.  Now, at almost 7 months, I know he recognizes the word when I say it without the sign too!  Same goes for “diaper”.   He could be a squirmy little worm but as soon as I give him the sign letting him know I am going to change his diaper, he calms down and lies real still – waiting for it!

So, when I was given the opportunity to review the Baby Hands DVDs, My Baby Can Talk, I was just thrilled!  Now, I’m not a big fan of letting Whistler watch TV, but I made an exception for this.  I really like these DVDs because it is a great visual tool to use in teaching, not just a reference.  Plus, I don’t know what it is about them, but he just absolutely loves to watch.  The First Signs DVD does a great job of keeping the babies’ attention without overstimulating.  Whistler has favorite parts of the DVD, but is generally overall excited when he watches.  The DVDs do state for babies 10 months and older, but I can tell you that Whistler loves them at 7 months.  He has also learned a new sign in just this short amount of time.  He gets really excited when the part about “duck” comes on.  I then realized that one of his favorites toys is a plush duck that quacks when you squeeze him.  To test out my theory, I gave him the sign for duck and asked “Where is your duck?” and he immediately looked to exactly where it was sitting and started crawling towards it!  I was shocked!  I didn’t teach him that one – the DVD did!

I was also sent the matching board books and absolutely love them.  While I know that Whistler is capable of learning the signs strictly from watching the DVD, of course, nothing can replace human interaction.  They are the perfect way to sit and snuggle with your baby and read/teach at the same time.  The books have big bright color photos, the word printed in large letters, a short poem about the word and also a diagram of how to sign the word so you can sign with your baby while reading.  Its a perfect teaching companion.

I can 100% attest that not only does baby sign language work, but that the My Baby Can Talk products are definitely a valuable tool in assisting you teach your baby these skills.  I also like that they use real American Sign Language and not some adapted baby/parent version.  I encourage you to try at least the first DVD, First Signs and see how the program works for you!   You can view a free preview here.
